Black History Month is an annually observed commemorative month originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora, initially lasting a week before becoming a month-long observation since 1970.

President Gerald Ford is credited with officially recognizing Black History Month in 1976, becoming the first U.S. president to do so; he issued a message calling on the public to honor the achievements of Black Americans throughout history.

"Unjust Deeds: History of Racial Covenants in Dane County and Beyond" is a traveling exhibit hosted by the Dane County Historical Society and co-sponsored by Beyond the Page Program, a Dane County Library Service. This exhibit and an accompanying program with be at the Mazomanie Free Library in November 2025.  Watch for more details.
